Back for more? If you read part 1 and still have reservations about starting your caring experience, we get it. Here are some more frequently asked questions we get about getting started as a foster carer.
What if I only want to foster certain age groups?
You will get the opportunity to chat to our care team about yourself, your family, home, lifestyle and plans for the future. Our staff are passionate about matching you with the most appropriate child, based on what is important to you.
We understand not every placement is a perfect fit, and you are not required to say yes to every child. Supporting the safety, development and empowerment of kids in care is our number one priority and we can’t do that without your help.
What happens if something bad happens?
Good or bad, you’re never alone at CareSouth. Our foster carers receive regular training and caseworker visits, 24/7 on-call support, regular chances to meet up with other foster carers – both in person and online and access to clinical services throughout their foster care experience. We want to support you, so you can support those who need it most.
What kind of training do you provide?
All our carers receive a three day course before starting their first placement. The course guides prospective carers through some of the background as to why children might enter care, the impact of trauma on brain development, the importance of ongoing connection with families, the importance of supporting a young person’s culture and identity, some practical strategies for supporting young people and the rights and responsibilities of carers.
We also provide on-going opportunities for further training and support as you go through your experience with us.
Having reservations about making that final leap is totally normal. Hear from some of our current foster carers, everyday people as they tell the truth about and some real insights into their experience so far.
