CareSouth took a creative approach to helping young people in the Shoalhaven understand the complexities of youth homelessness with a practical activity to engage them in the conversation, spread awareness and deconstruct some of the stereotypes.
Twenty Bomaderry High students worked together to design and build houses made out of cardboard boxes. The six houses built were diverse and creative making the experience for the school and CareSouth heaps of fun.
This program has enabled the Shoalhaven Youth Support Service from CareSouth to connect with students from locals schools who may be experiencing difficulties in their home lives.
Currently it is estimated that 37% of New South Wales’s homeless population is under the age of 25 and there could be up to 150 young people homeless each night in the Shoalhaven area.
CareSouth provide youth support services for a range of circumstances both in early intervention and crisis assistance. These services can include accompanying young people to appointments, linking with youth agencies or helping reconnect family ties. We also offer an Outreach service for those who are struggling to stay at home or their current accommodation.
